Commissariat Store Museum, Royal Historical Society of Queensland

The Commissariat Store is the only convict built building in Brisbane still in daily use. It was erected during the term of Captain Logan, Commandant of the Moreton Bay Penal Colony. The Royal Historical Society of Queensland appreciates the opportunity to introduce school groups, tour groups and visitors to life in convict Brisbane, to related historic displays and to share the wonders of Queensland's oldest occupied building.

Situated at 115 William Street in Brisbane's CBD, this riverside site of the store was the gateway to the infant colony. Prisoners and guards disembarking at King's Wharf would make their way past the building to reach the other buildings in the settlement. The store was completed in 1829. The building is home to the Society's extensive Welsby research library (open Thursdays), museum collection and occasional cultural activities and confernces.

The whole of the ground floor of the Commissariat Store Museum is devoted to a model of the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement on the Brisbane River. Using copies of building plans, our modeller has constructed each building in a 1:72 scale.
