Mineralogy

The museum is designed to reflect the industries and lifestyle of the district since settlement. The buildings, constructed to house machinery, were architecturally designed to resemble farm buildings and have all been built by voluntary labour from local community groups. The main shed displays pictures and machinery related to specific industries e.g. wool, dairy and mining. Aspects of lifestyle are captured in a two room cottage, nursery, and clothing display. Founded in 1856, the Museum holds collections of natural and cultural history which are among the finest in Australia. Natural history displays of fossils, animals and minerals have an emphasis on South Australian specimens. The owner, Miss Crouch, spent 26 years in Papua New Guinea in medical work. She shares something of this experience with visitors to the Centre. The Display Centre is her own property. As well as fossils and artefacts from the Highlands of Papua New Guinea the display includes rocks and minerals from many parts of the world. Donations made are sent towards medical work in Papua New Guinea.
The enginehouse has been fully restored (1986), apart from the original engine. A scale model (1:16) is fully operational and explained by guides. Videos (x3) provide further relevant information as do information boards on all three floors. The contents of the Museum reflect the life of Kapunda through home, work, sport and farming. The Museum covers some 11,000 square feet depicting all aspects of lifestyles and working life in Kapunda. The museum is located in the repaired ruins of large ornate brick engine houses, built in 1905 for the Beaconsfield "Tasmania" gold mine. This 950sqm space is augmented by a 540sqm new building, outside space and a near-by park depicting the flowery gully school and a miner's cottage. Our Museum consists of a house and various out buildings located on two town blocks in Port Welshpool. The collection is spread over the whole area. Our strong point is the early fishing industry in Corner Inlet, including a daily diary kept by the Smith family from 1887-1958. This mine ceased productive operations in 1954, but has now been restored to an operational level and developed as a living museum. Interactive displays include related machinery and miners' facilities. John Alexander, stonemason of Montrose Scotland, arrived in Ballarat, 1853, to build real history just 900 metres from the site of the 1854 Eureka Stockade, where the miners stood their ground against the harsh gold tax imposed by the government. In its middle class simple living style, Montrose captures our Celtic inheritance. Built in 1888, the Courthouse has been completely refurbished inside and includes the specially designed show cases to house this Pino Deriu Collection complements the beautiful restored Baltic Pine floor.
