Social History Museum

The museum is housed in a stylish colonial building originally designed as the administrative headquarters of the Borough of Sale. It houses a relatively large and diverse collection. Local government paper-based records and original council furniture are especially outstanding. It has a sizeable collection of portraits of local pioneers by Alfred Bock, and a significant collection of photographs of early Sale, military objects, textiles and household devices. Friends of J Ward Inc is a volunteer group dedicated to preserving the structure and history of J Ward Ararat. J Ward was for over 100 years the place of incarceration of Victoria's Criminally Insane. Built as a prison during the gold rush of 1857-61; was soon redundant and taken over by the lunacy dept. This is a substantial collection of material relating to Women's Liberation Movement activities in Victoria from 1969 onwards, including conferences, publications, posters, badges, t-shirts. The archives pay tribute to the individual and collective energy of lesbians who did much of the work involved.Approx. a dozen filing cabinets and several dozen boxes of mainly printed material, hundreds of posters, photographs, and other memorabilia.
The Australian Children's Folklore Collection (ACFC), housed in the Museum of Victoria, is Australia's only public archive of children's folklore. It contains games, rhymes, jokes, riddles, superstitions and other kinds of child lore from the 1940s to the present. Australia's first outdoor museum, Pioneer Settlement Museum portrays life in the Murray-Mallee in the era 1830-1930, including pre-contact between aborigines and settlers. The original four roomed building, c.1888, from which the irrigation scheme for the Western Goulburn Valley was developed, was purchased and restored in 1988. This building now houses local history and information on the history of irrigation. Voluntary organisation - collects artefacts, documents, photographs of historical significance relating to Phillip Island and District to preserve our heritage. We maintain and staff a museum open to the public. The society meets on 1st Wednesday of the month at 8.00pm. The Kyneton Museum collection is housed in a group of buildings, the most substantial of which was built in 1856 from local bluestone for the infant Bank of New South Wales. The branch was opened to service miners of the region's goldfields. Original outbuildings include kitchens, celler and stables, and these have been augmented by various outbuildings including an original settlers cottage which was relocated here in 1970.
