Social History Museum

The Museum is derived from Britain's first social history museum. It was founded in 1934 in England and was brought to Australia after World War II. After nearly 40 years of storage, it now occupies a new building opened in 1986 near Bribie Island, 40 kilometres North of Brisbane. Railco is a non profit company devoted to restoring and running steam trains. The Ravenshoe railway line is a full size, operating steam railway with original railway infrastructure and buildings. The train runs along the highest track in Queensland - a steeply graded and sharply curved pioneer line through hilly forested countryside. The railway features five first class fully restored timber carriages and a D17 tank engine "Capella". Innisfail museum is housed in the old School of Arts building and occupies two rooms. The collection relates to local history and contains items from all facets of life from the early settlement of Geraldton (name later changed to Innisfail after confusion with Geraldton in Western Australia). Apothecary Thomas Gaydon arrived in Childers, Queensland in 1894. He established Gaydon's Pharmacy (1894-1982) and became the town chemist, dentist, optician, veterinarian, anaesthetist and photographer. Gaydon's building is now the home of the Childer's Pharmaceutical Museum and still contains the beautiful cedar fittings, ground glass bottles with gold leaf lettering, leather bound prescription books, Wedgwood mortar and pestles, early pill making machines and old medicine labels. This large and varied collection of items and memorabilia which was started in 1939 was made available to the public when the museum opened in 1972. Most items have been collected from the local area and Queensland. A display of arms included knives, swords, bayonets and rifles. A helmet collection has examples from the armed forces, the police and the fire brigade. Other features include local history material, blacksmith's tools and motorcycles. This five room former station Mistress's residence houses the collections of the Boyne Valley Historical Society. These collections focus on the timber, gold mining and railway history which was so important to the development of the region. Two rooms of the cottage are reconstructed as a 1930s kitchen and bedroom. The rest of the cottage features display cases, photographs and wall displays on the themes of gold mining, timber and transport.

Brennan and Geraghty's Store Museum was originally an operating grocery store which opened in 1871 and traded in two generations of the same family for 101 years. The store was closed in 1972 by the founder's youngest son George. George was then aged 88 years old, he closed the store intact with unsold stock of soaps from the 1920s and curry powder from the 1890s. He also left behind the trading records, packagings and advertising material. The National Trust of Queensland purchased the store and associated family houses in 1975.
