Fire and Emergency Services Education and Heritage Centre WA
The beautiful old building which houses Perth’s Fire Safety Education Centre and Museum was Western Australia’s first purpose-built fire station when it was opened in 1901.
The old Perth Fire Station was one of the most advanced of its time, having its own blacksmith facilities and workshop where firefighters made fire fighting equipment and clothing (right down to buttons and boots).
In 1979, the Perth Brigade vacated the old Perth Fire Station and the building was reopened in 1985 as the Fire Safety Education Centre and Museum.
The building has been restored to its original form but without the stables and workshop. It is on the State Register of Heritage Places and has been assessed by the Heritage Commission and National Trust.
The museum is due to reopen to the public in 2009 as the Fire and Emergency Services Education and Heritage Centre. It will offer a heritage interpretation trail, emergency awareness displays and education programs.
For those interested in the history of firefighting, vintage fire appliances and a gallery of memorabilia will showcase the WA Fire Service's heritage.
