Patchwork Quilts

Patchwork rug made from tailors' samples, each sample 340 x 200mm. Each piece is edged in green wool blanket stitch, and then each piece is crocheted together using the same green wool. No padding or backing.

Patchwork quilt made from squares in cotton fabrics, each piece 120mm square. Filling is a cotton blanket (army style), and the backing is a brushed cotton ticking with a wide green stripe and white, yellow and maroon stripes. Patches are decorated with white cotton herringbone stitch.

The top is suit samples or remnants cut in squares and machined together. The centre panel is bordered with cotton tape. Each square is also bordered and forms a grid. There is no padding and the backing is a white cotton sheet with a floral pattern. It is hand stitched along the edges.

Patchwork quilt in the Tumbling Blocks pattern, made of silk fabrics in brocades, stripes, checks and plains, including some woven ribbons. Colours are mixed, each alternate row of diamonds being black. Backing is of fawn coloured cotton twill. Handsewn and hand quilted in an all over square grid. Half sized blocks form the binding edge. Padding not known.

"The quilt is of plain weave white cotton, quilted with white cotton thread. The design is 288 squares following the log cabin design. The lining is a fine white cotton.
The edges of the front face and the lining have been turned, and positioned within this seam is a ruffle. This ruffle is of very fine muslin with 2 rows of pin tucks along the edge. The ruffle runs along all edges of the quilt." [NGA] The quilt is not padded and is lined with white cotton fabric. 2400 x 2140mm

Fur fabric quilt made from scraps cut into squares and put together randomly. Colous are black, several greys, browns and some blacks and dark greys are astrakhan. There is no padding and the backing is a grey cotton bush blanket. The quilt is tied with buttons and wool.

This quilt is constructed from 40mm hexagons in different colours and patterns formed into rosettes. It is hand stitched and there is a deep border of green-blue material. The backing is white cotton.

"A wagga quilt machine-pieced from old woollen suiting fabrics; some hand stitching is visible along a few of the joins. The quilt has 3 layers: the top layer has a rectangular centre composed of randomly-pieced woollen patches in grey tonings with a border composed of irregular navy rectangles; the lining is made from corn bags, and the backing is a striped cotton fabric. The three layers are machined together at the edges, thus holding the filling in place. There is no quilting."

Tailors' samples quilt. Random sized rectangles joined in rows. There is a 3cm wide pleated frill of navy woollen material. The padding (synthetic) and the backing (green and white striped cotton) are recent. 1900 x 1850mm.
Crow's Nest and District Historical Society
Reversible quilt with an all over pattern of squares in printed cottons including cretonnes. Originally longer but it was shortened in 1980 by a member of the Crow's Nest and District Historical Society.

Crazy patchwork quilt in silks and velvets. Some patches with embroidered flowers, including wattle, worked in chenille thread. Machine quilting. There is a border of velvet. The backing is silk and has an envelope opening edged with silk cord. There is no padding. There is a matching nightgown sachet.

All over pattern of cotton rectangles mainly in borders with the outer border grey cotton. There is no padding. The backing is wholecloth of pink and red printed cotton.

Quilt of pieced repeat blocks in Art Deco Fan pattern, using 1930s fabrics, prints and solid. Blocks have a muslin background and quilt has a muslin backing. There has been some restoration done by previous owners.
