The Collection originally focused on acquiring landscape imagery by significant regional artists. This has now broadened to encourage the acquisition of artworks depicting or commenting on the Australian environment and cultural issues in a diverse range of visual art mediums. Collection highlights include wildlife textile works by Annemieke Mein, goldfield landscapes by Percy Masters, and high country hut photographic collection by David Oldfield. The Gallery also holds a number of works by significant Australian artists such as James Gleeson, David Bromley, Juan DaVillla, Peter Booth, Arthur Boyd and Brett Whitley.

The Gallery continues to support a developing and significant Permanent Collection of more than 900 works, consisting of paintings, works on paper, ceramics, sculpture, textiles, woodwork and metalwork. Boasting the work of artists of both national and international significance held in the Gallery's Permanent Collection are Peter Booth, Andrew Brown, Clive Murray-White, David Oldfield and Kevin Lincoln.
