Gippsland Art Gallery - Sale
The Gippsland Art Gallery is a publicly funded regional gallery in Sale in South Eastern Victoria. The Gallery was established in 1965 and is located at the Port of sale Civic Centre on the Princess Hwy approximately 200km east of Melbourne. The collections focus is on works depicting the environment and landscape of the region as well as works from significant Australian artists of all genres. The Gallery holds 29 exhibitions annually across three exhibition spaces and a sculpture courtyard. Our annual exhibition program provides for a line-up of activities including exhibition openings, artist and curator talks, bus tours, panel discussions and film nights. The Gallery has an annex exhibition space in the near by town of Maffra which is available for hire by artists and art groups.
The Gippsland Art Gallery-Sale is also home to the John Leslie Art Prize, a $10,000 non-acquisitive biennial art prize for works of art referring to the Australian environment.
From the novice to the art history student the Gallery makes available by appointment a significant reference library, comprised of educative texts on Australian and Indigenous Art, international art, biographic reference material, historic and archival material, art journals and exhibition catalogues.
Designed to accommodate a variety of age groups through useful and engaging links to the exhibition program, the Gallery is proud to offer one of the most progressive Art Education programs in regional Australia.
The Gallery Shop offers an extensive collection of rare art texts and reference books as well as visually exquisite calendars and coffee table books. The shop also stocks jewellery by contemporary designers and a range of original ceramics and glassware by established and emerging designers/makers as well as unique merchandise from around the world for those for who have run out of gift ideas.
The adjoining licensed cafe Relish @ the Gallery provides light refreshments, lunch and dinner for those who wish to relax after their visit either indoors or in the sculpture courtyard.

4 Exhibition Spaces, Gallery Shop, Toilets
The Gippsland Art Gallery-Sale was developed to promote the work of artists in the central Gippsland region. The Collection originally focused on acquiring landscape imagery by significant regional artists. This has now broadened to encourage the acquisition of artworks depicting or commenting on the Australian environment and cultural issues in a diverse range of visual art mediums. Collection highlights include wildlife textile works by Annemieke Mein, goldfield landscapes by Percy Masters, and high country hut photographic collection by David Oldfield. The Gallery also holds a number of works by significant Australian artists such as James Gleeson, David Bromley, Juan DaVillla, Peter Booth, Arthur Boyd and Brett Whitley.
The Gallery continues to support a developing and significant Permanent Collection of more than 900 works, consisting of paintings, works on paper, ceramics, sculpture, textiles, woodwork and metalwork. Boasting the work of artists of both national and international significance held in the Gallery's Permanent Collection are Peter Booth, Andrew Brown, Clive Murray-White, David Oldfield and Kevin Lincoln.
