Rail Transport Museum
The museum is operated by Rail Heritage WA with an extensive collection from various aspects of Western Australian railways. Whilst the Society was formed in 1959, it was not until 1974 that it was able to open a museum to share its collection with the public of Western Australia.
The Society meets at 8pm on the second Friday of the month at the museum. Volunteers do not need to be members of the Society and help is welcomed! In addition to the preservation of railway items, the Society encourages related research and the publication of material relating to the history of railways in WA. Also on the premises is the WA Model Railway Club who has its display open to the public when the museum is open on Sundays and in school holidays. Rail Heritage WA is the major owner of railway rollingstock at the Boyanup Museum of Transport and Rural Industries, as well as the Federation and Heritage Trains.
Groups at other times by appointment
A total of over 130 large exhibits includes locomotives, carriages and freight vehicles whilst smaller items are housed in a special exhibition building. There are three relocated railway structures at the museum - a signal cabin with frames, 'Zanthus' station and a section of the canopy at Kalgoorlie station. Access to to the archives with over 3,000 photographs and records dating back over 100 years can be arranged. All items are part of the history of railways in WA.
