City of Stirling Libraries

City of Stirling Libraries

Our authority began as the Perth Road Board in 1871, with an area of over 250 square miles. It became the Shire of Perth in 1961 and the City of Stirling in 1971. We are striving to collect and preserve as complete a record of the area as possible. This will enable current and future researchers of all ages to tell our story as it is in all aspects. Much of the fascinating detail of how people lived in previous decades is never written down and can be lost forever. However, the oral history process can capture wonderful and important moments of life and provide a revealing window into the past.

The City of Stirling Local Studies collection has a core set of books, photographs, and oral history recordings providing information on the social, educational, vocational and cultural history of their local government area, as well as some videos, slides and other documents.

The City of Stirling’s corporate memory is held in the Archives Collection. Delving into the Archives may locate historical detail that celebrates the past and enriches the present. The City is committed to retaining this socially important information for future generations. The Archives records include a range of historical documents of value to historians and those interested in social studies and related subjects. The information is wide-ranging, from records of Council decisions to copies of speeches made at the openings of buildings, festivals and other events.
