With origins dating back to 1826, the Library has a unique history and a collection consisting of over 5 million items plus 9,533 linear metres of manuscripts and 5,368 hours of oral history. It is a premier information resource for the people of New South Wales and beyond.

The Mitchell and State Reference Libraries are open Monday - Friday 9.00am - 9.00pm. The State reference Library is open Saturday and Sunday 11.00am - 5.00pm. Mitchell Library is closed on Sunday.

Collection: 
The Mitchell Library and the Dixson Library form the Australian Research Collections of the State Library of New South Wales. These Collections contain materials in a variety of formats relating to Australia and the south-west Pacific, with special emphasis on the state of New South Wales.

All kinds of published and unpublished materials are held, including books, magazines, journals, government reports, pamphlets, posters, programs, sheet music, manuscripts, archives, oral history tapes, computer disks, maps, paintings, drawings, photographs, prints and architectural plans.

The State Reference Library provides a wide range of information services to the people of New South Wales.

Answers to the broadest or most specific information enquiry can be found in its extensive reference collection and closed access collection of over two million items. The collection is particularly strong in New South Wales and Australian resources such as government publications, Sydney and New South Wales newspapers.
