Description: 
Quilt of 2025 hexagons stitched together to form diamond patterns. Hand sewn using paper templates. Materials are cottons and plains typical of the thirties period. The backing is blue cotton and the quilt is bound with many rows of coloured bias binding through which is treaded window cord. There is no padding. The quilt is called 'Grandmothers' Flower Garden quilt'.

History: 

The quilt was made in the 1930s by the President and members of the Mildura C.W.A. In the 1970s it was donated to the Mildura and District Historical Society. It is now on permanent display at Langtree Hall, a folk museum of local history that is behind the Cottage in Walnut Avenue Mildura.

Story: 

This quilt was commenced in the 1930s by the members of the newly formed Mildura branch of the Country Women's Association. Mrs. Edie Lawn was the president. She did most of the assembling and was also a memebr of Mildura Branch of the Embroiderers' Guild. The quilt was completed in 1938 after which it was displayed on special occasions and was always used as a cover on the President's table at the monthly meetings.
Forty years later Alice Farmer, Secretary of the Mildura and District Historical Society, accepted the quilt on behalf of the Society. It was originally in the Historical Society's rooms in the old power house. It is now on permanent loan to Langtree Hall where it is displayed.

Patchwork quilt in Grandmother's Flower Garden pattern consisting of groups of 7 rosettes and single rosettes with white filler hexagons and a border of rosettes alternating with 'bow tie' shapes of 5 patches in the middle of the quilt. Hand sewn in cotton dress and shirting materials , the colours mostly blues, pinks, reds, brown and white. The quilt top is covered in netting. There is no padding and the backing is cream cotton twill.

The centre of the quilt is a small blue 6 pointed star surrounded by a larger blue star. Blue stars also form a border to the quilt. The background material is a multicoloured small floral pattern on white cotton. The quilt is all hand worked over templates. The padding is cotton and the backing is polyester sheeting with a border of stars.

Unlined quilt. Central square of floral chintz with rectangular and chevron border making a larger frame that is set within another square-on-point frame edged with 2 toned red leaf pattererned chintz. This quilt is mainly pieced (squares, triangles, lozenges) but the hexagon rosettes are appliqued. Dress and furnishing cottons dating from the early 1800s. Raw edged, unfinished. All hand stitched.

" This is an unfinished section/piece of crazy quilting. Ribbons divide the piece horizontally into three sections; between these are bands of pastel fabrics and embroidery in the crazy quilt tradition. The fabrics and threads employed are very luxurious: laces, satin ribbons and silk velvets. The embroidery is very fine, employing a wide variety of stitches and threads. Cotton dress and shirting materials have been used in blues, pinks, brown, turkey red and Prussian blue. The quilt is hand sewn and each hexagon is 25mm wide. The backing is cream twill cotton in three panels. There is a hand sewn binding in red/pink cotton. There is overall quilting in chevron or zigzag pattern.
