River trade was to prove crucial to the economic development of Australia. It enabled the opening up of Australia's interior and dramatically increased the land given over to primary industries (particularly wool) and the capacity of those properties to transport their goods to the national and international marketplace.
Although the Murray River is a natural geopolitical dividing line, development along the Murray has occurred on both sides of the river, with the Victorian townships of Wodonga (over the river from Albury) having 'sister' status to Albury.
