To experience the outback, head to Broken Hill! Surrounded by hundreds of kilometres of forbidding arid terrain, Broken Hill was once the town of mining giant Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP). The richest silver, lead and zinc deposit in the world, for which the town was founded, is still being mined there.
Broken Hill is also an important service town for the people who live on isolated stations in the surrounding country. The School of the Air and the Royal Flying Doctor Service both operate from Broken Hill, along with the mail plane which delivers mail to outback stations weekly. Visitors can take a day trip with the plane for a rare insight into the sheer size and sense of space of the area, as well as its spectacular geography
