Hessian Suit

Description:
This outfit of wool work on hessian (fully lined) was worked as part of the therapy conducted by the Australian Army Women's Service (1943-1946) in Concord. They occupied the Thomas Walker Hospital building at the end of Hospital Road, Concord.

Mohall Mower

Description:
This is the first petrol-driven rotary mower made in Australia and is the machine from which all the modern mowers were copied, including the Victa. It was made in 1948 by Lawrence Hall at Specialty Engineers, Parramatta Rd, Five Dock. The mower was first used at his parent's home in Patterson St, Concord and on the grounds at the Cabarita Speedboat Club, Phillips St, Cabarita. It was in constant service for 10 years. It is powered by a 3 hp 'Hall' 2-stroke water-cooled marine engine. Note how the carburettor air intake passes down the right handlbar to prevent dust in the motor. The magneto is a separate unit and starting is by the forward handle and quadrant.

Moustach Cup and Saucer
Description:
In the 19th centruy most gentlemenr sported a magnificenct beard and moustache. To save getting his moustache wet when sipping his tea, special cups were designed with a china piece across one edge of the cup rim with just a small opening to allow the tea to be sipped.

Description:
The table cosists of over 1800 pieces of Australian and New Zealand timbers, shaped to form the 360 points of the compass. Charles Tilbury Parsons was born in Tilbury, England on 7th June, 1854. The family came to Australia when he was a young boy and they lived in Redfern. The table was made by candlelight as a gift for his bride, May Ann Burns, in 1878.
