The Gallery has a unique place amongst Australia’s public galleries through its commitment to supporting and promoting textile and fibre art - a curatorial and collection focus that began in the early 1970s.
Since its first acquisition in 1968, the Gallery’s permanent collection has grown to over 1000 objects, including artworks by Juan Davila, Kate Derum, Richard Goodwin, Virginia Kaiser, Kay Lawrence, Sara Lindsay and Bronwyn Oliver, as well as international artists Olga de Amaral (Colombia) and Marcel Marois (Canada).
Key sub-collections include:
- The Art of the Japanese Package, donated by The Japan Foundation
- Lionel Lindsay prints and bookmarks, donated by Peter Lindsay
- Fabric prints donated by textile design pioneer Frances Burke
- The Lady Barbara Grimwade Costume Collection - a survey of fashion design from 1956 to 1989, donated by Angus Kater Grimwade
- Textile, fibre and leather objects from the Victorian State Craft Collection (held on long term loan)
While the permanent collection is not always on exhibition, the Gallery maintains its dedication to highlighting excellence, innovation and diversity in contemporary textile and fibre art practice through an annual exhibition program featuring the work of visiting artists and exhibitions touring from other public galleries.
