Casula Powerhouse

Casula Powerhouse

Casula Powerhouse - a striking and successful example of adaptive re-use of a former industrial facility, which was opened in October 1994. Located on the banks of the George's River within the City of Liverpool. Formerly a 1950s power station, Casula Powerhouse became a contemporary multi-arts facility and quickly established itself as a leading community cultural development organisation. Casula Powerhouse is uniquely placed within major carriageways that include road, rail and airports, with a dedicated railway station link from Macarthur to the Central CBD of Sydney.

Casula Powerhouse produces and promotes all its own exhibitions, public programs and special events, forming the basis of a National Touring Program that has reached every metropolitan and regional centre in Australia with landmark projects such as Viet Nam Voices, Cybercultures, Shanghai Star, and Belonging. Casula Powerhouse also programs exhibitions and events for the Liverpool Regional Museum, the Liverpool City Library and Collingwood House.

Our core philosophy of programming is the integration of art, community, environment and heritage through the examination of contemporary issues, with a focus on the discourse between regional and global issues and the production of contemporary narratives about the place in which we live.

We work with culturally diverse communities. Casula Powerhouse provides opportunities for new, emerging and established artists, particularly artists from the South West Sydney region. Our practices also reflect community processes through consultative styles of project development and provide high-level multicultural events and opportunities to promote artists whose work engages with social and cultural complexities.

Currently, Casula Powerhouse is undergoing a major capital program, which will see the development of an international standard exhibition space, a multi-purpose theatre/performance space, artists' studios and artists' residency spaces, an artists' business centre, 7 exhibition spaces, a retail outlet and cafe. In addition, there will be a climate controlled gallery and collection storage space, a Children's Playground, Weaving Garden, production studios, and new office spaces. This capital project is in partnership with the NSW Government, NSW Ministry for the Arts, Liverpool City Council and its communities.

Whilst the capital development program is talking place, staff have relocated to the Liverpool Regional Museum site, located on the corner of Hume Highway and Congressional Drive, Liverpool.
