Of undeniable heritage significance, MRAG provides a visual feast. Steeped in history, the Federation Gothic building housing MRAG is an awe-inspiring example of early 1900s architecture. MRAG now boasts a stunning main gallery with state of the art facilities enabling the Maitland community and its visitors the enjoyment of touring exhibitions as well as its own very significant collection of contemporary Australian art.

MRAG move to its current location in November 2003 and Maitland City Council will soon begin extensive refurbishments and extensions to the art gallery. An architect has been appointed and building is expected to begin early 2007.

Plans for the grounds of the art gallery include more exhibition space, an artist in residence space, a sensory garden and a café.
Collection:

The MRAG collection of contemporary Australian paintings and prints began with the Maitland Art Prize in the 1950's and was enriched over the years through generous gifts. The last two years have brought significant increase in donations, with over 600 works of art being acquired by the art gallery, including important 20th century paintings and many works on paper.

With a change in location, gallery extensions and the appointment of Joe Eisenberg as Director-MRAG now has now found a focus of collecting works on paper to compliment the significant paintings already held in its ever growing collection.
