Benalla is 195km north east of Melbourne, on the Broken River, a tributary of the Goulburn River.
The neighbouring town of Glenrowan is famous as the place where the bushranger Ned Kelly made his last sgtand. The Kelly Museum in Benalla, which depicts the times and activities of the Ned Kelly Gan, is an interesting tourist feature.
