Horsham
Horsham is the commercial hub of the Wimmera district. It is located at the junction of the Wimmera, Henty and Western Highways around 300km north west of Melbourne. The major industries in Horsham are rural based, such as butter production and meat freezing.
Jeparit
The birthplace of Sir Robert Menzies, Prime Minister of Australia from 1939-1941 and 1949-1966, Jeparit is located 370-km northwest of Melbourne on the Wimmera River. It is part of a rural district that produces wheat, wool, barley and oats.
The indigenous people that occupied the land were the Gromiluk, a branch of the Wotjobaluk tribe. The explorer Edward Eyre camped at nearby Lake Hindmarsh in 1838 while searching for an overland route from Melbourne to Adelaide.

Lake Hindmarsh
The Wimmera River flows into Lake Hindmarsh in the Western region of Victoria. The lake was named after the Governor of South Australia by explorer Edward John Ayre in 1838.
Pelicans breed on the islands within the lake.

Murtoa is a small rural town situated on the Wimmera Highway some 282km northwest of Melbourne and 31km northeast of Horsham. Although it is located around the lovely Lake Marma, Murtoa's economy is largely dependant on the wheat produced in the area.

Stawell
Gold was discovered at Stawell (known then as Pleasant Creek) in 1853, and the Stawell mine became the eight richest mine in Victoria. Gold is still being mined there today. The area is also a productive grazing and wheat growing region.
