Description:
Wholecloth quilt with top of red sateen. Hnad quilted with a large central rosette in a 'gothic' border then square on point border and outer border with rosettes in rectangular corner panel. The backing is cotton sateen with printed floral bouquets. The thick padding is cotton. This type of quilt is called 'cuttunina' in the Sicilian dialect which means 'has cotton inside'.

History:
The quilt was made by Giuseppa Avvocato in Salaparuta, Sicily and is now owned by her daughter Santa Maltese.
Story:
" This quilt was left to Santa by her mother who died when Santa was 3 years old. When Santa married in Italy in 1951 and she used it then - she has found it too heavy to use in recent years. It is a treasured memento of Santa's mother - Santa has no memories of her mother."

Wholecloth pram quilt with a top of pink cotton sateen, and the reverse is a more finely woven, ivory, fabric. All over quilting design as main feature, with stylised hearts, leaves and cross hatching. The padding is cotton batting. 870 x 660 mm.

There are whole circles and pieced circles against a plain cream calico background. It is wool lined and is quilted. There are the initials 'A.B.' and '1828' on a central piece. Wholecloth quilt of pink satin with machine qulting in squares across the main part of the quilt, and two rows of two lots of stitching around the wide border. The quare pattern on the quilt top is overlaid with a grid of applied thick white braid. Backing of cotton. Padding appears to be enclosed in white cotton. Fragile condition.

Wholecloth quilt made from pink satin, with similar pink cotton backing. The padding is cotton wadding. It is hand quilted and the pattern is a large central circular motif of a leaf pattern. There is a fan design in each corner and the in-fill pattern is of curved and straight parallel lines. The external border is four parallel lines.
