A small town in the northern section of the Mount Lofty Ranges, on the main road between Adelaide and Broken Hill. Burra is 156km north of Adelaide.
Burra is one of Australia's oldest mining settlements - copper was first discovered in 1845 and mining brought boom growth to the area. By 1877, when minin ceased, the town had a population of around 5,000. In recent years, mining of low-grade copper by open-cut methods has been established.
