The Italian Historical Society [I.H.S] was established in 1980 to collect, preserve, interpret and foster an understanding of the history and heritage of Italian immigration to Australia. It is the only historical society with this specialization in Australia. The main components of the HIS Collection are the library, the photographic collection, oral histories, letters, documents and official records. Within these collections are the other key sub-categories including diplomatic archives, internment records and newspaper cuttings. The HIS is located symbolically, in the heart of Italian Carlton and is part of Co.As.It, the official welfare agency for the Italian community for the Italian community in Victoria.

Collection: 
The strength of the collection are the photographs (approx 10,000, focusing on the great wave of immigration to Australia following the second world war. Also of great significance is the Oral histories collection (300 tapes) which record first hand accounts of the migrant experience. The Internment records document information on the Italians (4,700) interned in Australia during WWII
