Acland Coal Mine Museum

Acland was the last underground coal mine on the Darling Downs of Queensland and the last in Australia to work under these conditions, the only one to be intact from a working colliery. Guided tours show how and why items were used, the history and make-up of coal.

Eight buildings and associated machinery. All items used by coal miners at the Acland Colliery (1913-1984). Hand Borers used 1913 to 1956 - Coal Cutter, Loader, Loco's, Crusher, Winch and drum used 1956 to 1984. Coal mining lights from Tallow to modern electric, Gas Testing - Safety Lamp, Drager, Anemometer, Sling Hygrometer, Books etc.

One of the smallest P.F. Loaders manufactured.

Brought to the Acland Colliery from the Hunter Valley in NSW in 1956. Used here until 1973 when it was replaced by a mines mobile.

Winch

Description:
Motor 90HP, variable speed, star delta wound, electric. Drum - main and tail, drums used, 3/4 inch rope.

Drums first used with a steam winch, brought to Acland in 1956 with the brooks electric motor. Worked until 9th November, 1984.

Last underground Man Transporter, in South East Qld. Used to Transport miners underground at the Oakleigh colliery, Rosewood (closed Dec.1997).

Diesel Loco

15 HP single cylinder diesel motor with scrubber box (for coal mines underground), chain drive, used to pull coal skips underground.

Sent to A.E. Anderson and Co of South Brisbane, after manufacture in 1952, used excell colliery-Bluff C.Q., Burgowan colliery and Acland colliery. One of only 7 left in Australia.
