Description:
Dresden plate quilt with pointed pieces set around a white centre. Fabrics are checks, floral patterns and plains of the 1930s. The twenty blocks are sashed with plain mauve fabric which does not meet evenly in some places. The padding is two layers of cotton bedspreads. The backing is open weave rough quality cotton.

History:
The history is unknown except that it was bought at a garage sale in the Castro Valley of the San Francisco area of California, USA in approximately 1992 by the present owner. It is not used now.
Story:
"The way in which the present owner acquired the quilt is quite interesting. She went to a garage sale in the Castro Valley near San Francisco, California USA, and the quilt was being used to block up a broken window in the garage. So she was able to exchange an old acrylic blanket which she happened to have in the car for the very well worn quilt. As the acrylic blanket would not hold water the vendor thought that he was getting the best of the bargain." [Joy Hill Quilt Historian WAQA]

Crazy patchwork quilt of pieces of plain and patterned silks in bright and pastel colours, each patch edged and decorated with a variety of embroidery stitches, including star, spider, french knot and feather and herringbone variations. 2 patches of early aniline dyed blue silk. Machine made cotton quilt with 100mm cotton squares placed diagonally with peaks running around the edge. The colours are mainly autiumn tones and the patterns include checks, tartans, florals, geometric and plains. Materials were scraps left over from sewing projects such as children's clothes. There is a matching valance.
Pieced hexagons, English paper method. Large hexagons form the centre with a border of smaller hexagons. The fabrics are all cotton in a wide range of colours and patterns. There is no padding. The backing is cotton, large white floral design on dark blue. The hexagons are hand pieced and the edges machined.

Double sided patchwork quilt/rug. Mainly squares machined together in strips (8 across). Average square 22 to 24cms. One side has a large piece of dark grey woollen material. The materials for the squares include tweed, mohair,many woollens, tartans and cream blanketing all of which were scraps or from used clothing.
