History: 

Made by Mrs Rene Raynor at Porepunkah, near Bright (VIC), between 1917 and 1920. Donated to the Bright & District Historical Society.

Story: 

Notes from telephone conversation with Gwyneth Millar of the Bright Historical Society:
"The quilt was made by Mrs Rene Raynor who was a teacher at the Porepunkah school between 1917 and 1920. Her husband George was a farmer and blacksmith. The quilt is hexagons of ordinary cotton material. There is no padding and the backing is pale green sheeting or similar. The Raynor family is no longer in the district �
The Historical Society started when the Railway finished about 1972 and Gwyneth believes the quilt was donated then. Some years ago it was repaired by Ruby Pollard of Ballarat."

Backing is of pink satin with pink satin ribbon covering the joining seams. Hand sewn with some machine stitching. Feather stitching along the edge. There is no padding.

This hand pieced and hand quilted hexagon quilt is in a pattern often called 'Grandmother's Flower Garden'. The background is white and there are concentric rows of double rosettes each with a yellow centre. The colours start in the centre of the quilt with pink and then follow the rainbow. Paper templates were used. The padding is cotton (American) and the backing is cotton floral poplin.

Patchwork quilt of hexagon patches with a large central group of 14 rows, then groups or 'flowers' of 6 patches placed over the rest of the quilt. The colours are red, black, white and blue, in a mixture of stripes, florals and plains. No padding. Backing is a double bed sheet. Hand sewn.
