Quilt made from 'blue bags' joined as small squares in rows. Approximately 180 blue bags in total. There is a frill around all sides.
History:
The blue bags were collected by Elizabeth Jackson Cox (born Ellis) who made them into a table cloth which she later gave to her grand-daughter, Jill Scheetz. Jill made it into a quilt to use on her children's cots. It is not used now.
Story:
Elizabeth Jackson Cox was born at Docker's Plains Vic. in 1895 and died in 1985. She collected the blue bags over a very long period. Elizabeth Cox was the maternal grandmother of the present owner.
'Blue Bags' were small squares of a fine open weave cotton containing knobs of an ultramarine mixture. They were dunked in the rinsing water at the end of a wash to make clothes and household linen look brighter.

Materials are vyella and clydella scraps from childhood dresses of the maker's first four children, augmented with scraps from a dressmaker and a book of samples. Pieced repeat block, hand pieced over papers in a diamond pattern. Blue patterned border. There is no padding and the quilt has been recently backed with calico. The 2 layers are tied together. 2240 x 1830 mm.
Quilt made of 9120 very small Suffolk Puffs, each one about the size of a 20 cent piece. "Each piece backed and the front of it drawn up like a reticule. It was not backed and was rather fragile, so I backed it on to a sheet, as it was heavy and in danger of tearing when lifted." [Gillian Sullivan]

This unfinished cover has a centre frame of a simple block. There are alternating plain and patterned borders including sword tooth, flying geese and squares on point. It is hand pieced with plain and twill weave cottons, variety of stripes, checks, florals and plains. There is no backing.
