Description:
Patchwork quilt made from brightly coloured printed cotton fabrics in hexagon patches hand sewn together in rosettes, and stitched by machine onto a border of bright teal blue fabric. Fabric scraps for the patchwork were donated from friends. No padding. Backing is polished cotton curtain lining.

History:
Made by Jane Ellen Meynink (born Crothers, 1894-1983) in Brisbane (Qld) who began quilting in her retirement aged 70. Made before 1965 for her grand-daughter Margaret Stuart Meynink (born Easton), before she married. Now owned by Bill and Barbara Meynink. This is the 2nd of 6 quilts made by Jane.
Story:
Jane Ellen Meynink was an accomplished needlewoman, doing fancywork and tapestry. She was also a good cook. The aspect of her work which Jane Ellen really enjoyed was the donation of fabrics by friends, as she enjoyed the donors' visits.
"This quilt was made as a single bedcover. For Margie's marriage the quilt was extended in all directions for use on the double bed."

This quilt has been strip pieced with no regular pattern. It seems a large quilt has been made then folded in half. The materials used are woollen skirting pieces in a variety of colours. It could be used either way. There is no padding and it is very heavy.

" This is an unfinished section/piece of crazy quilting. Ribbons divide the piece horizontally into three sections; between these are bands of pastel fabrics and embroidery in the crazy quilt tradition. The fabrics and threads employed are very luxurious: laces, satin ribbons and silk velvets. The embroidery is very fine, employing a wide variety of stitches and threads. Patchwork quilt made from diamond patches in the 'Cotton Box' pattern, in a wide variety of cotton fabrics, including plains, checks, stripes and florals. The patches have blotting paper templates. The quilt is edged with diamond shapes in a red floral cotton. The backing is of the same red floral pattern, featuring yellow, turquoise and white flowers and leaves. Hand sewn.

Small square piece of crazy patchwork in silks and taffetas. Many of the seams are oversewn with decorative embroidery stitches. There is a calico backing.
