Description: 
Handsewn quilt with central appliqué scene of Japanese women and Mt. Fuji. Appliqué flowers form a border around the centre panel and three rows of open fans a second border. Each fan is different. The padding is cotton and the backing is polyester sheeting with a border of fans. 2380 x 2355 mm
History: 

The quilt was made by Joyce Lydia Lannin (born Harvey 1918) at Lake Grace, Western Australia in the 1950s. It is still owned by Joyce and is used.

Story: 

Joyce Lydia Lannin. "As long as she can remember Joyce has had an interest in sewing. As a small child she sat and watched her mother sewing at the machine or doing fancy work by hand so it is not surprising that she soon had a needle and cotton in her hands
When her mother began doing patchwork it was no wonder that Joyce took an interest in that too. From her mother she obtained her first hexagon template and was soon spending all her spare time sewing medallions together to make her first quilt. She worked the medallions in patterns as the ideas came into her head with the result that the quilt is very beautiful. At this time there were no books as it was before patchwork became popular.
After completing the first quilt Joyce decided to make a quilt for each of her four granddaughters. These quilts were made with large patches forming stars in the colours of their bedrooms. They are all different as the patches are arranged differently and thus each has its own appearance."

9 large blocks of crazy patchwork in silks and velvets. The blocks are divided by strips of deep ruby coloured silk. There is a wide ruby border with peaks to which is attached cream lace. The backing is beige silk. The main blocks are outlined with feather stitch in gold thread and many individual patches are outlined in fancy stitches and have embroidered motifs some of which are Australian eg centre patch has Sturt's Desert Pea flowers, parrots, wattle. There are also English flowers, Japanese motifs, flags, domestic objects and Marianne's initials. Embroidery is in a variety of threads including chenille.

" Reversible patchwork quilt of woollen suiting in grey, blue, navy, maroon and brown. The fabrics appear to be new tailor's sample pieces (the sizing is still present on the fabric, signifying it has never been washed). The patches are rectangular and vary in size. Both sides have different designs. The front of the quilt has 4 rows of 12 vertical rectangles then below this are 4 rows of 7 horizontal rectangles followed below by 4 rows of 11 vertical rectangles. The reverse of the quilt has a section at the top and bottom composed of 5 rows of 9 horizontal rectangles. The central area is made up of a centre section of 6 rows of 5 vertical rectangles; flanked on either side by a column of 10 horizontal rectangles and two columns of 8 smaller vertical rectangles.
The patchwork layers are joined at the edges with machine stitching. The patchwork layers and padding are machine quilted on the front down 2 vertical lines following joins in the patchwork; therefore not being totally straight. The lines are more noticeable on the reverse as the 2 sides do not match. The front face is displayed at the NGA.
Between the patchwork layers is a striped cotton blanket in black, sky blue, white and cream." [NGA]

Cot quilt of mixed textiles and techniques. Made in sections and stitched together possibly with some padding. It features embroidered and appliqued animals (cats, donkey, elephant, squirrel, birds, kangaroo, emu) and nursery rhyme characters. Materials are cotton, silk, wool, imitation fur. There is a black velvet patch with a cross stitch parrot and embroidered date and initials 'May 1925 AE'. The backing is woven self patterned curtain material. There is a ruffle around the edge in the same material.
