Description:
Block pattern. Square within a square with 4 set together with plain mauve rectangles between. Fabrics range from the 1890s. The quilt has been patched with red striped fabric. Cross hatch hand quilting in the mauve rectangles. The padding is thin cotton and the backing is indigo cotton (faded). 1990 x 1670mm
History:
This quilt is thought to have been made in rural Kentucky, USA in the 1890s. It was purchased by the present owner through the internet. It is not used now.

" This is an unfinished section/piece of crazy quilting. Ribbons divide the piece horizontally into three sections; between these are bands of pastel fabrics and embroidery in the crazy quilt tradition. The fabrics and threads employed are very luxurious: laces, satin ribbons and silk velvets. The embroidery is very fine, employing a wide variety of stitches and threads. The quilt is a repeat block in the Ohio Star pattern in turkey red and cream. Quilted in squares in the cream block and diagonal lines in the star block. The fabric border is disintegrating. The backing is cream calico and the padding is cotton, badly degraded. 1940 x 1760mm.
Hexagonal piece of patchwork made up of 9 rows of rosettes of hexagons in a wide variety of colours and patterns mainly in silks and velvets. It is incomplete. Backing papers are still in the outside rows and also basting threads. Hexagons are joined by fine whip stitching. It is unlined.
