Description:
All cotton scrap quilt in 'Star' variation. Scalloped border bound with pink cotton. The padding is hand carded cotton and the backing is white cotton.

History:
The quilt was made by Alyce Bush (born Rodgers) 1870s-1949 in the early 1930s in Alabama USA. It was made for Anna Bush who then gave it to Alyce Wright. Alyce Bush, the maker, was Alyce Wright's paternal grandmother. Alyce Wright owns the quilt now. It is not used.
Story:
"Alyce Bush, a lone quilter, would spend many hours alone on her front porch as her husband was a security night watchman and slept during part of the day. Quilts were the main form of bed covering used in the family.
When I went to visit my grandmother the bedding comprised a feather mattress with at least 4 quilts layered on top. It was very cold in winter and we only had open fireplaces for heating."

The quilt is machine sewn and elaborately hand quilted with designs including fleur-de-lys shape, feathers, vine pattern, clam shells, 8 petalled flower and cable pattern with the main ground cross hatched. Patchwork quilt made from squares of cotton fabrics, from curtains, left over from dress making projects, and new fabrics. Colours are bright primaries and some pastels, prints are checks, florals, stripes and plain. Pieces were stitched together without any particular order. No padding or quilting. Backing is a cotton bedspread in turquoise and blue stripes.

Patchwork quilt of hexagons, handsewn, in print and plain cottons and rayon. Central star group has diamond shaped groups of patches, with smaller flower shapes, an inner border of a star shape in yellow hexagons, and an outer border of hexagons in vertical bands. Colours are mainly blues, reds, greens and yellow, the 'paths' and border are a pink print. The backing is herringbone stitched to the border or sashing, which has mitred corners.

Patchwork quilt in Grandmother's Flower Garden pattern consisting of groups of 7 rosettes and single rosettes with white filler hexagons and a border of rosettes alternating with 'bow tie' shapes of 5 patches in the middle of the quilt. Hand sewn in cotton dress and shirting materials , the colours mostly blues, pinks, reds, brown and white. The quilt top is covered in netting. There is no padding and the backing is cream cotton twill.
