Description:
All cotton scrap quilt in 'Star' variation. Scalloped border bound with pink cotton. The padding is hand carded cotton and the backing is white cotton.

History:
The quilt was made by Alyce Bush (born Rodgers) 1870s-1949 in the early 1930s in Alabama USA. It was made for Anna Bush who then gave it to Alyce Wright. Alyce Bush, the maker, was Alyce Wright's paternal grandmother. Alyce Wright owns the quilt now. It is not used.
Story:
"Alyce Bush, a lone quilter, would spend many hours alone on her front porch as her husband was a security night watchman and slept during part of the day. Quilts were the main form of bed covering used in the family.
When I went to visit my grandmother the bedding comprised a feather mattress with at least 4 quilts layered on top. It was very cold in winter and we only had open fireplaces for heating."

Colours are, in the dark sections, blues, greens, browns, yellow and pinks. The base of the blocks is blue and white ticking. The padding is probably cotton. Backing is of green cotton. Cotton quilt made in the USA. Pattern is the 'Evening Star' and each star has a frame. It is hand pieced and hand quilted and uses shirting material. It has been modified along two sides where the block extension is visible, having been turned to make a hem. The backing is calico and the padding is cotton.

Patchwork top with a centre frame of a mauve cross outlined in black within a square bordered with pink. The rest of the top is rectangles and squares in a wide variety of materials. There is no padding. The backing is brown, possibly curtain material.

Quilt made of hexagons in cotton materials, the hexagons set in the 'Grandmother's Flower Garden' pattern with 6 patterned patches set around a plain coloured centre patch and white hexagons forming 'paths'. There is a white cotton backing with the edges turned under all the way around and top and backing are joined by a blue machine sewn satin stitch. The patches are hand sewn.
