Description:
Quilt consisting of log cabin blocks with a centre piece, 520 x 460mm, of crazy patchwork. Each log cabin block is individually done and each 'log' is stuffed with a mixture of fur (angora?) and wool. The crazy patchwork centre is heavily embroidered and embellished with shells, beads and sequins. 'Devonport' and '1895' are embroidered on separate patches. There is no backing.

History:
This quilt is known as 'The Devonport Quilt' and is part of the 'Adam Tement Collection'. Adam Tement 1962-1990 lived in Launceston and was a serious collector of Australian pottery of which he had a very fine national collection. He later "fell in love with quilts" [Di Tement]. Adam died of cystic fibrosis and the quilts are now owned by his mother Di.

Quilt centre has four pieced squares set within a star shaped border of square patches, set within a square frame (74cm square) edged with half triangles, then set within a red frame (114cm x 114 cm), diamond shaped or 'on point'. In the 4 triangles are double diamond shapes, then a wide border of squares and 'square within a square' patches with red triangles. Red binding. Padding is probably wool. Backing is a cotton print in browns in a floral paisley. All over quilting. Handsewn.

Quilt top in block design based on hexagons in a variety of patterned cotton with a plain pink hexagon in the centre. The hexagons are linked by triangles of pink cotton. Cottons include florals, stripes, checks, tartans and novelty prints. 2080 x 2300mm
Machine sewn quilt made from 125mm squares of scraps left over from dressmaking, joined in strips and then the strips joined. There is a border of fawn cotton and the backing is the same material. The padding is an old blanket and the border is padded with sheep's wool.

Repeat block quilt top based on hexagons, each 350 mm diameter. Six hexagons and a centre one make a 'flower' and these are set in rows against a plain calico background. Patterned cotton fabrics are used for the hexagons, small prints, fine stripes and tiny flowers. As it is a quilt top only, there is no lining or padding. 2100 x 1800 mm
Cotton patchwork quilt in an all over pattern of diamonds in a wide variety of patterned and plain materials. Many seams are oversewn in feather stitch which goes through to the backing of calico.

" This well worn quilt is of pieced diamonds set into squares (221 make up the quilt). Thick woollen fabric has been used for the pieces. These are with plain dyed fabrics or tartans and checks.
