Description:
Hexagon shaped cover in cottons, rayons, linens and seersuckers. Central hexagon motif surrounded by 6 groups of hexagons. In fill is also hexagons. Red patterned hexagon border. The backing is calico. There is no padding. Embroidered on the back is ' D.Channells, Coffs HBR, 1961'.

History:
This cover was made by Doris Channells in Coffs Harbour on the north coast of NSW in 1961. When Doris died she left it in her will to Jewel Hide her grand-daughter. It is still used.
Story:
Doris Channells made this quilt/cover from pieces of old clothes including dresses and her husband's old shirts when they were worn out. She was the grand-daughter of David Jones' first tailor, James Conniff, who was brought to Australia to work in D.J's first shop in George street.

The front of the quilt has 13 rows of 12 vertical rectangles flanked on either side by a column of 22 horizontal rectangles. The reverse has a more interesting and complex design of small and very large rectangles, squares and triangles; with khaki contrasting with the duller greys and blues. The patchwork layers are joined at the edges with machine stitching and the quilt is machine quilted along 3 horizontal lines following joins in the patchwork; therefore not being totally straight. Quilt of crocheted squares (sometimes known as Granny squares) in pinks, blues, greens and brown, with a green crocheted border edged in brown. Quilt is backed. A cot quilt or a knee rug.
Block pattern consisting of a circle, hexagon and circle within a square. Cotton dressmaking fabrics with a few plain creams. Hand pieced and hand quilted. At some stage has been machine reinforced. Now faded, worn and damaged especially one end. Quilting pattern is four leaf clover inside large cable. The backing is 4 different pink toned fabrics in longitudinal stripes. Hand pieced cot quilt made from small rectangular shapes of a great variety of materials including cottons, silks, wools and velvets. The backing is cotton sateen in 3 colours and is brought to the front to form a border of pink, cream and yellow.

Patchwork top with a centre frame of a mauve cross outlined in black within a square bordered with pink. The rest of the top is rectangles and squares in a wide variety of materials. There is no padding. The backing is brown, possibly curtain material.

Grandmother's Flower Garden, also known as French Bouquet. The quilt comprises 181 flowers. No padding is used. Each flower has seven hexagonal patches, cut from a metal template pattern. Floral and plain silk materials are used and mounted on pale blue moire taffeta.
