Description: 
Cotton quilt of rectangles (150 x 100mm) of patterned materials in various colours and textures. Many patterns in different colourways as quilt was made from a bag of material samples. The plain off white backing has been machined to the top of the quilt and turned through then a row of zig zag sewed to the top edge. There is no padding.

History: 

The quilt was made by Lillian Furze in Melbourne for the marriage of her daughter Nini in 1959. It is still owned by Nini. It is not used now.

Story: 

"Lucy Lillian Cock was born at Baringhup in April, 1908, horse and buggy days. Family moved to Camberwell then to William Street, Brighton near 'Castlefield', a grand home and property owned by her grandfather. She attended 'Firbank' Grammar school, later became a dressmaker and model. At 30 she married William (Bill) Crivelli, they moved to Cranbourne. He took Lord Casey's place in Parliament while Lord Casey went to War. Bill died 1949. Lilly then ran a boarding house in Brighton. They had 2 daughters. Margaret married and lives in England and Nini who attended Yooralla in Carlton. The quilt was made for Nini when she married Les Baxter in 1959. Les died 1996, Nini remarried in 1998. Lillian remarried in 1960 to Noel Furze, she died on 4/11/1997."

Unfinished patchwork top made from hexagon patches in the 'Grandmother's Flower Garden' pattern, in glazed and unglazed cottons and some twill fabrics. 7 patches for flowers with white and some cream patches forming paths. All fabrics are patterned and date from c.1825-1840, including pieces of toile de jouy, stripes and florals. Colours are predominantly reds and blues with some green, brown, purple; one flower is in chrome yellow, 8 flowers are in turkey red indicating probably the latest fabric. The quilt is hand sewn and the papers are in tact in most patches.

Handsewn quilt pieced in red, blue, green and yellow print cottons in 'Lone Star' pattern, with diamond shaped patches. The main star is edged with a red and cream sawtooth border. In each corner is a star made up of 4 rows of diamonds, surrounded by small 8 point stars in red and green. The background material is a cream and brown spot print. The backing is a printed cotton in a small all over purple leaf and bud print on cream. Quilting is in an all over wave pattern.

Cot quilt of mixed textiles and techniques. Made in sections and stitched together possibly with some padding. It features embroidered and appliqued animals (cats, donkey, elephant, squirrel, birds, kangaroo, emu) and nursery rhyme characters. Materials are cotton, silk, wool, imitation fur. There is a black velvet patch with a cross stitch parrot and embroidered date and initials 'May 1925 AE'. The backing is woven self patterned curtain material. There is a ruffle around the edge in the same material.
