Description:
Pieced repeat block in hexagons, hand pieced and hand quilted. The pattern is sometimes called 'Grandmother's Garden'. Hexagons are a combination of plain and printed cottons, with a background of cream hexagons, outlined with green diamonds. Padding is cotton batting and the backing is white homespun. 2500 x 2030 mm.
History:
Quilt was made by Lenore Myrtle Howes (born Silvies, 1913 - 99) in North Platte, Nebraska, USA; probably in the 1930's. It was then owned by her daughter, Sandra Lee Mires James, and now by her granddaughter, the present owner. It is not used.
Story:
"I remember this quilt as always being in my childhood home. As children in the late 60's, early 70's my sister and I love playing 'Barbies' on it. My grandmother once remarked of the 'thousands' of pieces on it." [Shari Jamieson]

Double sided quilt. Side 1 has an off centre frame based on a hexagon and including triangles and squares in a concentric pattern. The borders are all small rectangles with a single strip of large rectangles at one end. Side 2 has a central patch of pieced shapes appliqued to the background. The borders are squares and rectangles many in striped shirting cotton. Side 1 has minimal quilting to the interlining but it does not go through to side 2. The padding is a thin sheet.

Yellow and white cotton Durham quilt with centre panel of patchwork blocks in counterchange design called 'Plate'. There is a wide yellow border and square white corner blocks. It is padded and there is a yellow backing. It is quilted all over following the patchwork pattern in the centre panel. Feather pattern border.

Quilt made from woollen dressmaking scraps, sewn to an army demob issue blanket, grey with blue stripes. Patches are feather stitched in red broder cotton thread. Quilt is edged with red cotton material zig zagged into place. Colours are pink, blue, brown, black and grey, in plain cloth, weaves and checks.

Pieces of heavy woollen material have been strip pieced and then joined. The joined pieces have then been folded over and restitched along the sides to make a double sided quilt. It is very heavy.
