Description: 
Quilt, single bed size, made from reused clothing roughly handstitched on to a backing of a wool/linen blanket type fabric in green, cream and brown stripes. Clothing is fronts and backs of old jumpers, vests etc as well as opened out sleeves in red, brown and grey. They are stitched together in several layers with long stitches. Another top may have been intended to cover the stitched down layers of clothing.

Made by the owner's grandmother, Bertha Fechner, in Loxton, SA in the late 1940s. Owned by Rozanne Andrew.

"Further on from last correspondence regarding information on 3 quilts I own from my paternal grandmother. � This is information on grandmother's life. Name - Bertha Fechner & Philip Fechner

Lived all their married [lives] at Loxton, South Australia, a town on the River Murray.
Both people of German descent but born in Australia.
Both very frugal in their use of food and possessions. Always preserved all their fruit, killed own animals, grown most of their fruit and vegetables. Grandmother of course made own clothes and many quilts in her lifetime. Many traditions from Germany passed down and carried on through the generations including language. Being able to knit, crochet, sew, embroider an essential part of education. Strong church followers always.
� Grandfather was a blacksmith and wheelright. Grandmother did 'home duties".

Block pattern consisting of a circle, hexagon and circle within a square. Cotton dressmaking fabrics with a few plain creams. Hand pieced and hand quilted. At some stage has been machine reinforced. Now faded, worn and damaged especially one end. Quilting pattern is four leaf clover inside large cable. The backing is 4 different pink toned fabrics in longitudinal stripes. Handsewn quilt pieced in red, blue, green and yellow print cottons in 'Lone Star' pattern, with diamond shaped patches. The main star is edged with a red and cream sawtooth border. In each corner is a star made up of 4 rows of diamonds, surrounded by small 8 point stars in red and green. The background material is a cream and brown spot print. The backing is a printed cotton in a small all over purple leaf and bud print on cream. Quilting is in an all over wave pattern.

Traditional Wagga rug made from 3 wheat bags joined along the long side by sewing with bag needle and twine. Machined twill cover was put on later in the 1960s. Originally no padding but now the bags are the padding. One of a pair(identical).

Crazy patchwork quilt made from silk and cotton fabrics, in patterns and plains, in bright colours. Patches are arranged around a central diamond shaped patch in yellow which is bordered with light blue. All seams are covered with featherstitch and herringbone stitch. Patches were stitched onto a calico backing. A recent calico backing ahs been added and dark blue binding attached to the edge. No padding.
