Description: 
This hand pieced and hand quilted hexagon quilt is in a pattern often called 'Grandmother's Flower Garden'. The background is white and there are concentric rows of double rosettes each with a yellow centre. The colours start in the centre of the quilt with pink and then follow the rainbow. Paper templates were used. The padding is cotton (American) and the backing is cotton floral poplin.

History: 

The quilt was made by Wendy Ritchie in 1966 in Melbourne for her daughter Susan Jane (now Shannon). Many of the cotton florals used were scraps left from dresses Wendy made for her daughters. Susan was born in 1961 and has always owned the quilt. It was on her bed from 1966 until 1978 when she left home and is not used now.

Story: 

"I (the maker of the quilt) embroidered from the first grade at school. Joined the Embroiderers Guild Vic in 1962. Served on the committee and was President from 1980-1983 inclusive. I have taught many techniques starting with English Patchwork in the late 1960s and including a variety of creative techniques in both design and painting/dyeing, machine embroidery and hand stitchery. I was born in Geelong in 1933."

"The Rajah "quilt" is a patchwork and appliquéd bed cover or coverlet. It is in pieced medallion or framed style: a popular design style for quilts in the British Isles in the mid 1800's. There is a central field of white cotton decorated with appliquéd (in broderie perse) chintz birds and floral motifs. This central field is framed by 12 bands or strips of patchwork printed cotton. The quilt is finished at the outer edge by white cotton decorated with appliquéd daisies on three sides and inscription in cross stitch surrounded by floral chintz attached with broderie perse on the fourth side. All fabrics used in the Rajah quilt are cotton with the exception of small amounts of linen and silk threads. The quilt shows evidence of being produced by many hands." Each side is made from different materials but in similar colours of aqua, blue, green and beige. The 2 layers are quilted together with a few machined lines of straight stitching. It has a folded and machine stitched edge. There is no padding.

Cot quilt of mixed textiles and techniques. Made in sections and stitched together possibly with some padding. It features embroidered and appliqued animals (cats, donkey, elephant, squirrel, birds, kangaroo, emu) and nursery rhyme characters. Materials are cotton, silk, wool, imitation fur. There is a black velvet patch with a cross stitch parrot and embroidered date and initials 'May 1925 AE'. The backing is woven self patterned curtain material. There is a ruffle around the edge in the same material.
