Description:
Double Irish chain set horizontally and vertically. Cotton, red on cream. The cream cotton backing is turned to the front for a border. Machine and hand pieced. Diagonal hand quilting. There is a padding of thin cotton. 1770 x 2250mm.
History:
The owner's grandmother purchased the quilt c.1920 from Amana Colonies (Historic Settlement) Amana, Iowa, USA. The quilt is not used now.

Tied regularly with pink thread. The quilt is padded with wool.

The light green squares are hand embroidered with Australian native birds, the medium green squares are decorated with pulled thread designs. No padding. Crazy patchwork quilt with patches of velvet, satin and silk joined in 12 blocks. Each seam is embroidered and many patches have embroidered flowers. There is a 140mm maroon velvet border. The backing is maroon silk. There is a sachet that belongs with the quilt.

The centre of the quilt is a small blue 6 pointed star surrounded by a larger blue star. Blue stars also form a border to the quilt. The background material is a multicoloured small floral pattern on white cotton. The quilt is all hand worked over templates. The padding is cotton and the backing is polyester sheeting with a border of stars.
