Description:
Quilt of white cotton octagonal patches made from bleached flour bags. Each patch has 8 segments which are stitched so that the middle of the segments puff up. Quilt has a frilled edging and a cotton backing.

History:
Made by Ada and Mary Pendergast, two of the daughters of Elizabeth Pendergast (Mrs John Pendergast) c.1890. Purchased by the Omeo Historical Society in 1973 at the Penders Court Homestead Clearing Sale.
Story:
"� Good information on the quilt is scarce. To the best of my knowledge the quilt was made by two of Mrs John Pendergast's daughters, Ada and Mary around the turn of the century. I have also enclosed some photocopies from Mrs Jane Vine Pendergast's book Pioneers of the Omeo District, which you may find helpful. The quilt itself does not seem to have any filling and its design is of octagons made up of pipe shape segments �"

Brett advised later that the quilt is called a 'snow' quilt.

The two long sides have a narrow red edging folded from the back. The other two sides have been 'bagged'. Filling is an unusual weave thought to be wool. Hand sewn hexagons over paper templates in a pattern known as 'Grandmother's Flower Garden'. Materials are printed dress cottons, patterned and plain, mainly in pinks, blues and browns. The border and backing is grey linen and is machine stitched on. There is no padding. 2060 x 1579 mm.
Patchwork quilt of hexagon patches in a variety of colours and fabrics, including cottons, wool, lace, nylon. Edging is of yellow cotton. It is backed but there is no filling or padding.

This is one of two single bed quilts in a pattern the owner calls 'Martha Washington's Flower Garden'. Flowers are in six hexagons in a variety of prints with a plain coloured centre. The background is cream, and the backing is calico. 2500 x 1800 mm.
