Description:
Wholecloth Greek quilt. "The fabric is a beautiful silk satin with a formal pattern of soft yellows and pinks on a turquoise background. Surrounding this is a 40cm wide border also of silk satin (cerise coloured). The quilt is machine pieced but hand quilted. The method of quilting is very interesting. A thick cream twist has been used and at first glance it seems that the quilt is tied as there are long pairs of stitches with gaps of about 4cm between them. However, either a long needle was used to make a pair of stitches OR each side may have been quilted separately with the needle...
History:
The quilt was made by Ekaterina Zounis (born Stamatikou) in Western Australia in about 1932. The quilt has been passed down through the family and is now owned by the great grand daughter of the maker, Mrs. Kereake Wray. It is not now used.
Story:
"Ekaterina Zounis (nee Stamatikou) was born on the island of Kastellorizo near Rhodes in Greece around 1880. She was married in Greece around the turn of the century and came to Australia in the late 1920s. She would have been in her mid- ��when she made this quilt as a wedding gift for her daughter-in-law. The maker died in 1935. Her son had brought her out to Australia with her husband who died in 1939." [Mrs Kereake Wray]

Wholecloth pram quilt with a top of pink cotton sateen, and the reverse is a more finely woven, ivory, fabric. All over quilting design as main feature, with stylised hearts, leaves and cross hatching. The padding is cotton batting. 870 x 660 mm.

Unfinished small quilt top of pale blue linen with squares of embroidery and silk patches appliqued and embroidered. The centre has embroidered coat of arms of the Baillie (or Bayley)family. Embroidered motifs are flowers, domestic items, anchor, butterfly, fan, basket, gardening implements. Total of 99 patches in silk, linen and cotton.

Hand embroidered pink silk quilt with white embroidery. Wide border of hand made lace thought to be French late 18th century. Cream silk backing and very thin padding.

Wholecloth quilt with white cotton centre, sky blue cotton border and dark blue binding. There are 9 repeat designs of cross stitched flowers and leaves in the centre section. Around the blue border there are 18 cross stitched flowers. Blue on blue and white on white cotton quilting of diagonal lines and curls pattern the quilt. The backing is white cotton and there is a very light padding.
