Description:
Hand pieced log cabin quilt in silks, satins and velvets. There is a silk backing machined on, possiby a later addition. The quilt has over 5000 pieced.

History:
The quilt is thought to have been made in Victoria c.1890. It is now in the collection of Annette Gero.
Story:
"The log cabin and its variations is one of the more common patterns made by Australian quilt makers. The pattern may have come from the USA during the Gold Rush, but it is more likely that it was introduced by Irish or Scottish settlers, as it was extremely common in Britain in the 19th century.
This quilt, in several of the pieces of yellow fabric, contains a British coat of arms - perhaps the selvage of the fabric (most of the fabric imported into Australia at this time came from Britain) or ribbons for cigar boxes (cigar ribbons)�.." [Annette Gero]

Small quilt made from pieces of heavy weight wooollen coat material cut into strips and machined together. It is reversible. Each side is made from different materials but in similar colours of aqua, blue, green and beige. The 2 layers are quilted together with a few machined lines of straight stitching. It has a folded and machine stitched edge. There is no padding.

Hexagonal piece of patchwork made up of 9 rows of rosettes of hexagons in a wide variety of colours and patterns mainly in silks and velvets. It is incomplete. Backing papers are still in the outside rows and also basting threads. Hexagons are joined by fine whip stitching. It is unlined.

Double sided patchwork quilt. One side has small 'Tumbling Block' pattern. The other side has larger pattern of pieced stars. It is made of silks, some printed, some solid colours mainly blues, greens cream and black. There is no padding.

Suffolk Puff quilt made from a variety of scraps of dress materials including cottons and terylene. It is backed with white cotton sheeting and edged with a frill of white terylene. There is a matching pillow sham.

Crazy patchwork quilt pieced from velvets, satins, braids, taffetas, cottons with some decorative stitching. A ruffle and the backing are in ruby red satin. There is a dacron type padding.
