Description:
Hand pieced log cabin quilt in silks, satins and velvets. There is a silk backing machined on, possiby a later addition. The quilt has over 5000 pieced.

History:
The quilt is thought to have been made in Victoria c.1890. It is now in the collection of Annette Gero.
Story:
"The log cabin and its variations is one of the more common patterns made by Australian quilt makers. The pattern may have come from the USA during the Gold Rush, but it is more likely that it was introduced by Irish or Scottish settlers, as it was extremely common in Britain in the 19th century.
This quilt, in several of the pieces of yellow fabric, contains a British coat of arms - perhaps the selvage of the fabric (most of the fabric imported into Australia at this time came from Britain) or ribbons for cigar boxes (cigar ribbons)�.." [Annette Gero]

The top of this utility quilt is machine pieced rectangles of woollen materials joined in strips. It includes corduroys and velveteens and woollen tartan. The backing is an Indian cotton blanket.

Patchwork quilt in the Log Cabin pattern, made from cotton fabrics in prints and plains in bright colours. There are 185 squares, all sewn on to check gingham. No padding. Backing is of black cotton.

Rectangular quilt with front and back made of rectangles of cotton samples of shirt materials, in checks, stripes and plains. Colours are soft muted reds, greens, blues, yellows and browns, and pastels. Construction is 3 to 4 rows of rectangles joined across the quilt. Padding is probably an old blanket. There is a row of hand quilting approximately the width of one patch in from the edge, holding the layers together.

English pieced hexagonal star quilt in silks, velvets and satins. Commercially made fringe in cotton maroon twill. Some motifs have herringbone stitching around them. There is no padding and the backing is polished cotton twill. 1840 x 1660 mm
Double sided quilt. One side is different shapes including rectangles in various sizes in wools and men's suiting material. It is hand pieced. The pther side is mainly cottons in florals of different patterns joined in strips of varying width and machine and hand pieced. There is a 25mm binding. The padding is an old blanket.
