Description: 
Patchwork quilt made of hexagons in printed cottons, colours predominantly red, blue pink, brown and yellow. Handsewn. Attached to a white cotton backing. Cotton padding.

History: 

Quilt started by Betty Searle in Yackandandah (Victoria) 1970. After her death in 1992 the quilt was given to her sister Dorothy Taylor who completed it. Owned by her sister Win Nolan.

Story: 

Betty Searle "Born in Yackandandah & lived nmost of her life there. The maker was left the job of bringing up 5 girls who had lost their mother. Betty was a good sewer & made all their clothes in the 1930s. She lived in retirement in a Stone Cottage in Yackandandah & spent every Sunday at the Museum helping. It was in that time - 1970 - she commenced the Quilt. After her death in 1992 the Quilt was given to me to complete I put it aside a couple of times because I knew also that Betty had run into trouble. I got to & sorted it out by lying it on the floor & adding piece by piece until I got a square. It gave me great pleasure to complete it for Win."

Quilt is made of wool tailors' samples, each measuring 6 x 3 1/2 inches. The colours are predominantly navy and grey. Most pieces are striped but some more distinctly than others. Both sides are mad eof smaples, one side being mainly grey and the other almost exclusively navy. There doesn't seem to be another layer of material as padding. There is no added decoration. Made on a treadle sewing machine.

"A medallion or framed quilt in design. There is a central field of small patchwork diamonds, and from this radiates plain stripes of fabric bordering areas of patchwork panels. The edge of the quilt carries bands of red cotton, which are slightly larger at the top and bottom edges, and here the band is additionally decorated with appliqué diamonds. The fabric of the patchwork is cotton in fine plain weave of pale coloured florals and small geometric designs. The framing and border stripes are of bright red twill weave cotton. The small diamonds of the central field are hand sewn, with more use of machine stitching around the outer edge of the quilt.
The quilt is not padded. The patchwork is fully lined with a printed plain weave cotton fabric with a design commemorating Queen Victoria's Jubilee. The design is based on a repeated grid of circles. In the centre of each circle is a cameo of Queen Victoria, surrounded by images of the national flowers of England, Scotland and Ireland: the rose, the thistle and the shamrock. The edge of the front face of the quilt is trimmed with a red and white cotton braid." [NGA] 2380 x 2220mm
