Description:

Machine sewn quilt made from 125mm squares of scraps left over from dressmaking, joined in strips and then the strips joined. There is a border of fawn cotton and the backing is the same material. The padding is an old blanket and the border is padded with sheep's wool.

History:

This quilt was made by Marjorie Treasy at 'The Mount' Dumbalk Nth, Victoria in the mid 1960s. It is one of three made about the same time. It is either stored or in use on one of two single beds.

Story:

"Mum is in good health and at 86 is quite active and lives alone with her garden to care for. She drives and has been vetry involved with many organisations and still drives to meetings of church, CWA, Elderly Citizens Club, bowls (indoor), flower shows (ex judge) with her friends. Life member of CWA. Farm life at Mirboo in her youth and during the depression has given her a deeply ingrained sense of being resourceful and a habit of naturally recycling everything. She lives well but is never wasteful. We think she is wonderful."

With side 2 there appears to have been 2 stages as if the quilt was extended perhaps to match side 1. It is also squares, rectangles and strips. Sparsley machine quilted. There is no binding but side 2 has been turned over to side 1 and stitched by machine.

Ribbons divide the piece horizontally into three sections; between these are bands of pastel fabrics and embroidery in the crazy quilt tradition. The fabrics and threads employed are very luxurious: laces, satin ribbons and silk velvets. The embroidery is very fine, employing a wide variety of stitches and threads. Handsewn quilt of hexagon patches in cotton prints in 'Grandmother's Flower Garden' pattern. Each flower consists of double rows of print hexagons around a yellow centre and these are joined by 'paths' in plain green and white cotton. Backing is green cotton and there is a wool padding. There is outline quilting around all green and white hexagons and centre and first row of hexagons in flowers.

Pieced patchwork quilt of hexagons in cottons, chintzes and linen. The centre is pieced in 6 point hexagon stars, then radiating out are large hexagons alternating with tumbling blocks, then 6 piece hexagon stars and 4 piece hexagon diamonds. Some pieces have Egyptian patterns dating from 1800 - 1805. The backing is cream linen.
