Description: 
Quilt made of Tailors' wool samples in stripes, checks and plain,, rectangles in different sizes machined together in strips. Colours are grey, navy, brown, light grey and cream. Lining or backing is of patterned cotton, in three layers as it has worn and been replaced. Machine and zigzag quilting.

History: 

Made by the owner Marion Coleman in 1956 -1957, in Maffra (VIC). Used as a car rug, picnic rug, camp rug, bed blanket and knee rug.

Story: 

"I made it about 1956-7 when I was only a new wife and mother, living in Maffra away from my family & friends who we had left in Melb. In those years housing was impossible to obtain in Melb. & my new husband liked working in the country, so we made our move (have never regretted it) but money was tight.
This Wagga quilt is still used but now more appreciated than it has been over the years. One of the first 'Time Payment' purchases we made was a PHOENIX sewing machine which did zigzag, had cams for fancy stitches, was a portable model semi industrial.
As money was tight, time was available and pure wool sample books had been given to me by my tailor maternal grand-father. I sewed them together, some smaller than other larger samples so making a sort of pattern - prob. so they would 'fit' together.
My g'father, a Scot, had his Tailor's shop in Glenfeerie Rd, Malvern, Vic. for many years. He made suits - jacket & trousers or jacket & skirts as ordered & fitted personally. I went to his shop on Sat. mornings to 'help' - probably my company was the only 'help'."

Small rectangular bed cover, probably child's or even doll's, made from rectangles of cream linen stitched together with hand sewn french seams. The top surface is decorated with small squares and rectangles of coloured silk, velvet, wool and cotton attached approximately 25mm apart, with 3 stitches in centre of patch to attach to background. Bright pink wool patches stand out.

Frame quilt with central square of fabric around which the borders or frames have been added in strips. The fabrics are mostly floral, a heavy weight similar to damask or curtaining. The colours are mainly beige, brown, green and red. The original backing was a red paisly design. A second backing, of red, brown and yellow leaves on white (possibly dating from 1930s), has been added at a later date. Quilt is bound with brown fabric.

"The Rajah "quilt" is a patchwork and appliquéd bed cover or coverlet. It is in pieced medallion or framed style: a popular design style for quilts in the British Isles in the mid 1800's. There is a central field of white cotton decorated with appliquéd (in broderie perse) chintz birds and floral motifs. This central field is framed by 12 bands or strips of patchwork printed cotton. The quilt is finished at the outer edge by white cotton decorated with appliquéd daisies on three sides and inscription in cross stitch surrounded by floral chintz attached with broderie perse on the fourth side. All fabrics used in the Rajah quilt are cotton with the exception of small amounts of linen and silk threads. The quilt shows evidence of being produced by many hands." Repeat block quilt top based on hexagons, each 350 mm diameter. Six hexagons and a centre one make a 'flower' and these are set in rows against a plain calico background. Patterned cotton fabrics are used for the hexagons, small prints, fine stripes and tiny flowers. As it is a quilt top only, there is no lining or padding. 2100 x 1800 mm

Rectangular quilt with front and back made of rectangles of cotton samples of shirt materials, in checks, stripes and plains. Colours are soft muted reds, greens, blues, yellows and browns, and pastels. Construction is 3 to 4 rows of rectangles joined across the quilt. Padding is probably an old blanket. There is a row of hand quilting approximately the width of one patch in from the edge, holding the layers together.
