Description:
Quilt in traditional Bow Tie pattern. Hand pieced and hand quilted with a wide variety of late 1930-1940 dress fabrics. The central block is cream homespun with the outline of the bow ties quilted. The padding is cotton and the backing is yellow muslin. 2080 x 1830mm.
History:
The maker and history is unknown. The quilt was bought by Judy Newman in America in 1986 and is now owned by Valerie Gorey. The quilt is used.

The pattern is 'Saw Tooth Star' or 'Jacob's Ladder' variation. Backing is of cotton, padding of cotton. Hand sewn and hand quilted.

Pieced repeat block, hand pieced over papers in a diamond pattern. Blue patterned border. There is no padding and the quilt has been recently backed with calico. The 2 layers are tied together. 2240 x 1830 mm.

Ribbons divide the piece horizontally into three sections; between these are bands of pastel fabrics and embroidery in the crazy quilt tradition. The fabrics and threads employed are very luxurious: laces, satin ribbons and silk velvets. The embroidery is very fine, employing a wide variety of stitches and threads. The backing is cotton, large white floral design on dark blue. The hexagons are hand pieced and the edges machined.
