Description: 
Quilt made of two overlapping woollen, children's garments, heavily embroidered with wool (herringbone stitch), backed with checked flannelette, edged with woollen crochet. Woollen crochet edging has 5 rows of treble crochet, with one row of double crochet on edge. No apparent padding.

History: 

Known as 'Nana Thompson's Quilt'. Made by Mrs Maude Thompson, in Narrandera, NSW c.1930s. Owned by Mrs Lynne Brown, daughter of Ada, Maude's fourth daughter.

Story: 

"Maude Thompson was widowed at the age of 30, after only 10 years of marriage and was left with five small daughters. At that time there was not a Widow's Pension available. Mrs Thompson and her daughters lived in the house which was originally her childhood home, with the support of her father, her brother, and her stepson, Frederick.
The home, as photographed, is still occupied, and Mrs Thompson lived in that same home for all but three of her 97 years.
She was a very artistic and creative person - she always added decorative touches to her handwork, and children's clothing. Many of her handcrafts are still in the family, examples of her embroidery, crochet work and hooked woollen rugs backed with hessian, are still being used today."

Quilt with centre area of silk triangles framed with small squares and the rest of the top is larger squares. Wide variety of prints and plain materials. There is no padding. The backing is cotton and "E.M.B." is cross stitched in one corner. "Back is interesting as it's all the same fabric, joined but it appears to have been stitched with a running stitch (cf quilting) before it was attached to the front. It was definitely done after being joined as the stitching design follows through the seams." [Fran Williams]

Quilt centre has four pieced squares set within a star shaped border of square patches, set within a square frame (74cm square) edged with half triangles, then set within a red frame (114cm x 114 cm), diamond shaped or 'on point'. In the 4 triangles are double diamond shapes, then a wide border of squares and 'square within a square' patches with red triangles. Red binding. Padding is probably wool. Backing is a cotton print in browns in a floral paisley. All over quilting. Handsewn.

The rest of the quilt is made from strips of rectangles in different sizes sewn in rows. There is a narrow pieced frame, then an outer border of pieced rectangles. Mostly pastel colours. No padding. Backing is calico. There is a little embroidery.
