Description: 
Quilt made of two overlapping woollen, children's garments, heavily embroidered with wool (herringbone stitch), backed with checked flannelette, edged with woollen crochet. Woollen crochet edging has 5 rows of treble crochet, with one row of double crochet on edge. No apparent padding.

History: 

Known as 'Nana Thompson's Quilt'. Made by Mrs Maude Thompson, in Narrandera, NSW c.1930s. Owned by Mrs Lynne Brown, daughter of Ada, Maude's fourth daughter.

Story: 

"Maude Thompson was widowed at the age of 30, after only 10 years of marriage and was left with five small daughters. At that time there was not a Widow's Pension available. Mrs Thompson and her daughters lived in the house which was originally her childhood home, with the support of her father, her brother, and her stepson, Frederick.
The home, as photographed, is still occupied, and Mrs Thompson lived in that same home for all but three of her 97 years.
She was a very artistic and creative person - she always added decorative touches to her handwork, and children's clothing. Many of her handcrafts are still in the family, examples of her embroidery, crochet work and hooked woollen rugs backed with hessian, are still being used today."

Double sided patchwork quilt. Both sides have central frame surrounded by borders. Side 1 has diamond of squares set in a square frame 490mm. Borders are squares and triangles. Side 2 is central frame of squares on point surrounded by plain grey velvet border then marroon border. Materials are cottons, silks, velvet, crepe, rayons in a wide variety of colours and apperned and plain. Machine construction. No quilting. Padding is a cream wool blanket.

"This is not a true quilt, but a pieced coverlet with a lining. The entire front face of the quilt is of pieced hexagonal and part hexagonal printed cotton patches. Pieces are joined with hand sewn over casting stitches of many different coloured cotton threads. The joining of the patches forms a 'daisy' pattern in some areas and in others it is random. The edge of the front face of the quilt carries a 40mm strip of cotton Chinoiserie which is then folded to the reverse of the quilt and becomes part of the lining. The template for the hexagon patches remains in many of the patches: writing paper and news print." [NGA]
The work is not padded "The lining at the edge of the quilt (for approx.175mm) is a plain weave fabric of a Chinoiserie design. The centre field of the lining is a rectangular panel of a twill weave brushed cotton fabric with a striped floral design." [NGA] 2215 x 2070mm

Friendship Quilt'. All cotton with thick cotton padding. Each of the large panels of patchwork is different and many are signed by the makers who belonged to the Rebecca Lodge in Linwood California. Dates on the squares with signatures are 1933. Wide variety of colours and patterned and plain fabrics. The quilt is now in 2 pieces.
