Description:
Patchwork quilt made from cotton hexagon patches constructed in the 'Grandmother's Flower Garden' pattern. The rosettes are set in horizontal rows with cream 'paths' between. The quilt is edged with a border, 21cm wide, of blue and white striped cotton in a trianglur pattern. No padding.

History:
Edith Emily Peate made the quilt on shipboard between England and Australia in the 1880s. It passed to her grand-daughter Mrs. Barbara Coupland who, in 1978, together with Mr. E.A.Coupland donated it to the Tamworth Historical Society Inc. The quilt is stored at 'Calala Cottage' and shown once a year on the Society's "Living in the Nineties" day

Mr. And Mrs. Coupland lived at Woollahra Sydney and at Jamberoo on the south coast but it is not known where Edith Peate lived.

A 'Farm Life Quilt' made from alternate squares of beige linen and brightly coloured cotton headcloth. The coloured squares are farm animals and birds in a variety of embroidery stitches. The beige squares have a cornucopia design embroidered in dark brown stem stitch. There is a wide border front and back of beige linen. The backing is brown and white check cotton. There is no padding.
Machine stitched quilt made from tailors' samples cut into squares. The colours are mainly greys, browns and fawns. There is no padding and the backing is a grey herringbone heavy woollen material with a white fleck. Log Cabin quilt featuring centre square and 3 outer borders. Evidence of later repairs and additions by machine and hand sewing. There is white paint on it. The log cabin pieces are sewn on to black netting. There is no padding and the backing is a centre piece of gold damask/sateen and green and black sateen borders.

Hand pieced hexagon quilt in pattern known as 'Grandmother's Flower Garden". 12 hexagons, in patterned cottons, form the outer border of each flower with an inner border of 6 matching plain coloured hexagons and all flowers have a yellow hexagon centre. There is no padding, a cotton backing and it is hand quilted.

The quilt consists of a central field within a main field within a narrow border a main border and then an outer border. The centre field consists of embroidered Prince of Wales feathers with 4 embroidered motifs, parrot, duck, open fan and 4 playing cards within an appliqued sunburst border. The quilt has many embroidered and appliqued motifs, some just abstract shapes, many with a Chinese Japanese theme. It is quilted and padded but the type of padding is unknown. The backing is red cotton sateen.
