Believed to date back to the time of Black Death (Bubonic Plague) in Europe in the 1800s. Was hung around the neck on a leather thong, a bloodsoaked bit of rag inside it. The wearer was to be protected from flea bites as fleas would be attracted to the bloody cloth.
