Description:
Hand sewn quilt of cotton materials constructed of 12 rows down by 12 rows across of squares with various appliqué motifs of hearts, circles, leaf sprigs, stars, fans and geometric patterns. The quilt centre has a large rectangle with an appliqué vase of flowers in a cream oval. The border consists of large triangles of alternating blue and red prints with a single green leaf appliquéd in each triangle. The backing is cream linen joined from 4 pieces, embroidered at the top in blue linen thread is: 'Sarah Evans 1806'.

History:
The quilt was made by Sarah Evans c. 1806. It was donated to the National Trust WA by Emma David, a distant relation from Dalkeith WA. It is in storage at Woodbridge, Midland WA.

Quilt centre has four pieced squares set within a star shaped border of square patches, set within a square frame (74cm square) edged with half triangles, then set within a red frame (114cm x 114 cm), diamond shaped or 'on point'. In the 4 triangles are double diamond shapes, then a wide border of squares and 'square within a square' patches with red triangles. Red binding. Padding is probably wool. Backing is a cotton print in browns in a floral paisley. All over quilting. Handsewn.

Quilt top in block design based on hexagons in a variety of patterned cotton with a plain pink hexagon in the centre. The hexagons are linked by triangles of pink cotton. Cottons include florals, stripes, checks, tartans and novelty prints. 2080 x 2300mm
Quilt top in postage stamp pattern typical of military quilts. 5 x 5 blocks each 280 x 280mm. Colours are predominantly red, black and cream. Thought to have been made using uniform material from the Crimean war

Patchwork quilt of hexagon patches (3.5cm sides approx), handsewn, in cotton fabrics in sprig prints, stripes, checks, florals and plains. Colours are pre-aniline dyes, in lavender, green, red, beige and purple. Centre of quilt is pastel colours with a central patch embroidered in red: 'Elsey Rowbotham her work May 1 1869'. Quilt has a wide border of squares and triangles.Padding is thin cotton. Backing is off white calico. Quilted in parallel lines.
