The Hermitage, National Trust WA
This fascinating property built in 1936 is part of the remarkable architectural heritage of Monsignor John Hawes. An architect and priest, Hawes designed The Hermitage as a retirement home, but lived there only briefly. The Hermitage has a distinctive steeply pitched roof with mullioned windows, brick arches and exposed timbering. It features a finely crafted floor of inlaid polished jarrah blocks and decorative carved wooden hearts in panels. The building is said to be modelled on Captain Cook's cottage in England, and resembles a baronial hall in miniature.
