History: 

This quilt was made by Annie Whitehead (1868-1953) at Cudgewa, Victoria early this century. It is now in the collection of Annette Gero.

Story: 

"Mary Annie Whitehead was born in Lincolnshire UK in 1868 and died in 1953, having married Edwin Simon Whitehead at Wabba Station, near Corryong in 1895. They had 5 children. Her second youngest child, Gladys Mary married Joseph Gibson, whose sisters Daphne, Olive, and Ruby made the waggas [AG cat. Nos 156, 157]. The family had migrated from Benambra, near Omeo in to Thowgla, near Corryong. The main reason for the shift was that the valleys flowing into the Murray were more fertile and the climate a lot milder than the bleak high plains of the Alps. The shift was accomplished by bullock waggon and horses. It must have been a rather hazardous journey, as there were no roads to follow."

Side 2 is central frame of squares on point surrounded by plain grey velvet border then marroon border. Materials are cottons, silks, velvet, crepe, rayons in a wide variety of colours and apperned and plain. Machine construction. No quilting. Padding is a cream wool blanket.

Hand embroidered pink silk quilt with white embroidery. Wide border of hand made lace thought to be French late 18th century. Cream silk backing and very thin padding.

"This is not a true quilt, but a pieced coverlet with a lining. The entire front face of the quilt is of pieced hexagonal and part hexagonal printed cotton patches. Pieces are joined with hand sewn over casting stitches of many different coloured cotton threads. The joining of the patches forms a 'daisy' pattern in some areas and in others it is random. The edge of the front face of the quilt carries a 40mm strip of cotton Chinoiserie which is then folded to the reverse of the quilt and becomes part of the lining. The template for the hexagon patches remains in many of the patches: writing paper and news print." [NGA]
The work is not padded "The lining at the edge of the quilt (for approx.175mm) is a plain weave fabric of a Chinoiserie design. The centre field of the lining is a rectangular panel of a twill weave brushed cotton fabric with a striped floral design." [NGA] 2215 x 2070mm
Fred Wood
Patchwork quilt made from a variety of printed cottons over 70 prints, using shirting and dress fabrics, fabrics also from pyjamas, curtains, aprons, tablecloths. The centre medallion is a square within a square with white borders, the inner frame made of sawtooth triangles. This is surrounded by pieced triangles, square within a square and crosses. Outer frame of sawtooth triangles, and outer border pieced of squares and triangles. Colours are pinks, blues, burgundy and pastels, with floral, stripe and check prints. Lining of cotton. Backed with a printed cotton. Quilt is bound on all edges.
